Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementia
Last Updated: 24-April-2009
Dementia is the term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of illnesses which cause a progressive decline in a person's functioning. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.
Most people with dementia are older but it is important to remember that most older people do not get dementia. It is not a normal part of ageing. Diagnosis is a particularly stressful, uncertain and emotional time for the person, their partner, family and friends.
Personal stories are a valuable source of information and reassurance. They present first-hand accounts of the day to day challenges others have faced, and give insights into the coping strategies they have used.
