Motor Neurone Disease/ALS
Last Updated: 05-Feb-2009
MND (Motor Neurone Disease or Motor Neuron Disease) or ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a condition which relentlessly destroys the nerves that control the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow while leaving the intellect and senses generally unaffected.
There is considerable variability between patients in respect of initial symptoms, rate and pattern of progression, and survival time after diagnosis. It is an uncommon, but by no means rare disorder.
Personal stories are a valuable source of information and reassurance. They present first-hand accounts of the day to day challenges others have faced, and give insights into the coping strategies they have used.
