Epilepsy Surgery 'Treatments' transcript
Maree, 11 months after grid monitoring and surgery, and husband Rob - I tried all sorts of medications in the beginning and over time. Nothing ever had control over my seizures. I continued to have seizures. As I got older, it became less controlled.
Mark, 7 years after surgery - I went through a series of different medications. Some of them seemed to have the seizures under control for a little while, and then I'd start to have them again. We did go through a few different types. Unfortunately, the one that is meant to be best suited to my type [of epilepsy], I was allergic to. So I couldn't take it. We played with the doses and seemed to have it reasonably under control. But it didn't completely stop the seizures from happening.
Sarah, 3 months after surgery, and mother Frances - The medication helped, but she was still getting seizures.
Denise and Frank's son, Luc, had surgery 1 year ago - We, at first, didn't want to put him on any sort of drugs at all. We were really against it.
Frank - We even tried homeopathics and other alternative therapies.
Denise - But it was obvious that nothing was working. So, we reluctantly agreed to start him on drugs. They just didn't work.
Mark - I was able to drive again after going for a period without seizures. Then I'd have a seizure. In one case, I actually had a seizure whilst at the wheel of a car. That made me aware that things weren't under control properly. It made me go to the doctor and say that I needed to do something more than just take medication.
Louise, 9 months after surgery - I tried everything, and nothing seemed to be working. So, we had to try something different, which was the operation.
